We have three new design patterns to release. Our pattern on CONNECT:IN WORKSHOPS is useful for diverse teams approaching curriculum development projects in large units. The pattern details the specifically designed collaboration sessions our team has been running as part of a co-design approach to developing CLaS units. We’re also sharing a new pattern on COURSE READINGS. While readings are a common learning material, recent research shows that up to 80% of students don’t engage with assigned readings. This pattern presents a tested solution for promoting meaningful student engagement with readings. Finally, we have a new pattern on using ANNOUNCEMENTS to communicate regularly with students. This supports another recently published pattern on re-shaping traditional lectures into SELF-PACED ONLINE MODULES. We’ve found that when delivering learning in this mode, regular announcements become a crucial way to communicate with students and contribute to teacher presence. Announcements are a simple but powerful pattern to support connecting large groups of learners to diverse online learning materials.
We’re excited to announce that we will soon be launching a new, dedicated home for our CLaS design patterns. This will be a custom-built site to house the current patterns plus new ones we’re currently developing. We’ll be sharing a range of new patterns shortly including some on team teaching, feedback and reflection at scale. Patterns are most powerful when used together as part of a “pattern language”. The new site will have more flexibility to explore the possibilities of representing the CLaS pattern language as a whole.
