Many professions require prospective members to gain practical experience. Charities, non-profits, and NGOs are certainly one way for students to gain experience. But I suggest universities need to put staffing resources into finding opportunities in mainstream government agencies and companies. There is a role for some graduates in the non-profit sector, and also in startups, but most students will want a mainstream career. If their university can’t help them with that, the student may well wonder how useful their degree is.
